There’s a moment many of the women I work with describe in almost the same words. Life looks good from the outside. The career is built. The kids are grown or growing. The calendar is full of things she chose. And yet, somewhere in her forties or fifties, a quiet question starts showing up at odd hours (with, perhaps, a tinge of anxiety!):
Is this it?
Or…
Did I get it wrong?
Our culture has a name for this. We call it a midlife crisis, and we picture a sports car, an affair, a woman who’s “lost it.” The message underneath is clear: this feeling is a malfunction. Manage it. Get back to normal.
I want to offer you a different frame, one much older than ours.
Many wisdom traditions understood the middle of a woman’s life as a threshold. The maiden years were about becoming. The mother years, whether you mothered children, businesses, communities, or everyone around you, were about giving. And then came a turning. The body changes. Priorities shift. What used to fuel you stops working. These traditions didn’t see that as decline. They saw it as the beginning of a woman’s descent into her own depths: the passage through which she becomes the one who knows.
An initiation, not a crisis.
The difference matters. A crisis is something you get through. An initiation is something you go through, and come out changed.
What an initiation feels like from the inside
It rarely feels sacred while you’re in it. More often it feels like this:
The strategies that built your success suddenly feel heavy.
You’re less willing to perform, please, or pretend.
Old grief or anger surfaces without an obvious cause.
Your body is asking for something different, and it won’t negotiate.
You feel a pull toward depth that you can’t quite explain to the people around you.
If you recognize yourself here, nothing is wrong with you. Something is being cleared to make room.
I remember one of my “is this it?” moments, which on the other side of it, allowed me to truly listen to some of the stirrings of my soul that were slowly becoming screams. Tuning in and seeking some coaching helped me see that it was time to open my life to some new ways of being, and to take some risks that could have deterred my profession. But, what it actually did was help me to allow alignment to find me. After it all, I felt more myself than I had in years, and beginning to do more of the work I was called to.
Why we resist it
Most of the women I work with are extraordinarily capable. They’ve been rewarded their whole lives for pushing through. So when the threshold arrives, they do what has always worked: they try to optimize it. A new routine. A new certification. A new goal.
But an initiation can’t be optimized. It asks for what high-achieving women often find hardest: to stop, to listen, and to let some things end.
This is why I say success isn’t sovereignty. You can have every external marker in place and still be living by rules you never chose, or ones that no longer fit. The threshold is your invitation to discover what’s true for you now, not for the woman you were at 30.
Three questions for the threshold
You don’t need answers yet. Just let these sit with you this week:
What am I no longer willing to carry?
What part of me has been waiting for permission?
If I trusted this restlessness instead of fixing it, where might it lead? (I really love this one!)
Write your answers somewhere private. Notice what arrives first, before your practical mind edits it. That first answer is usually the truest.
You’re not late. You’re right on time.
So many women tell me they feel behind, that they should have figured this out years ago. I see it differently. The depth you’re reaching for now requires everything you’ve lived through to get here. The maiden couldn’t hold it. The busy mother didn’t have room for it. You do.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be writing about what this passage asks of us: how to trust our intuition again, how to release the roles we’ve outgrown, and what it means to walk this path with other women instead of alone.
For now, simply consider that what you’re feeling might not be a problem.
It might be a calling.
With you on the path, Mo
